Île aux Cerfs is one of Mauritius' most iconic sites. Located off the east coast, it's known for its turquoise lagoon, white sand beaches, and landscapes straight out of a postcard. Accessing it by private speedboat from the southeast of the island remains, by far, the best way to discover it: you avoid crowded boats, choose your own pace, and enjoy secret stops that only local skippers know.
Why visit Île aux Cerfs by private boat?
Group excursions sold in most hotels often board 40 to 60 people: long waits, little time on site, rushed snorkeling. With a private speedboat, you depart with a maximum of 6, the boat waits for you at each stop, and you can take your time to enjoy the GRSE waterfall, snorkeling, beach lunch, and even a sunset swim.
Departing from Île aux Aigrettes jetty (southeast) rather than Trou d'Eau Douce also provides a more complete itinerary: you cross the southeast lagoon, its small islands, and the waterfall before arriving at the back of Île aux Cerfs, on the calmer side.
Typical Île aux Cerfs day itinerary
9:00 AM — Boarding at Île aux Aigrettes jetty, quick briefing with the skipper, distribution of snorkeling equipment.
9:30 AM — Navigation in the southeast lagoon, first snorkeling stop at a preserved coral spot.
11:00 AM — Approach the Grande Rivière Sud-Est (GRSE) waterfall, surrounded by cliffs and lush vegetation. Photos and swimming possible.
12:30 PM — Lunch on the beach at the back of Île aux Cerfs: grilled fish, optional lobster, local salads, pineapple or flambéed banana for dessert.
2:30 PM — Free time on the beach, swimming, leisurely return along the small islands.
4:00 PM — Return to the boarding point.
What to bring for the trip?
Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen (ideally reef-safe to protect corals), cap, sunglasses, and some cash for any extras. Snorkeling equipment, soft drinks, local rum, and appetizers are provided on board. If you want the lobster menu, please notify 24 to 48 hours in advance.
What is the best time of year?
Île aux Cerfs can be visited all year round, but the period from October to May generally offers the clearest waters for snorkeling. From June to September, the trade winds can make the sea choppier in the morning; stops are adjusted accordingly then. In any case, the skipper chooses the spots based on the tide and wind to offer you the best conditions of the day.
