The Grand River South East waterfall, better known as GRSE waterfall, is one of the most photographed natural settings in Mauritius. Framed by a basaltic cliff and dense tropical vegetation, it can only be approached by boat—making it an essential stop on excursions from Mahébourg or Île aux Cerfs.
How to get there
The waterfall is located at the mouth of the Grand River South East, on the east coast of the island. There is no passable land route leading to the foot of the fall: you must access it via the lagoon. Most speedboat tours from Mahébourg include a 15 to 20-minute stop to get as close as possible, take photos, and, depending on conditions, swim.
The best time to see it
The waterfall is most impressive after the rainy season (January to April), when the flow is at its maximum. In the dry season, the stream of water is thinner but the environment remains spectacular. Morning light (9 am-11 am) is generally the best for photos.
